Skillbridge Intern Training Plan

For instructional interns, the Skillbridge applicant would complete training at the school level under direct supervision of a classroom teacher and under the authority of the building administrators. The intention of this position is to provide the intern with experience in the developmental continuum as a context for future work with children in schools. This experience could provide training that could lead to future positions as an instructional assistant or teacher.

 

For operational interns, the Skillbridge applicant would complete training at the school or district level under direct supervision of the employee with the appropriate skills for the intern and under the authority of school or district administrators. The intention of this type of position is to provide the intern with experience in school or district operational skills. This experience could provide training that could lead to future positions in the areas of educational finance, maintenance, transportation, technology, or food services.

 

Schedule Outline:

 

Instructional Interns:

Weeks 1/2- Building relationships with students and teammates; introduction to professional code of ethics

Weeks 3/4- Interactions with Families of students; educational communication; engagement with diverse populations (ethnic/cultural, socioeconomic, English language learners, and students with disabilities

Weeks 5/6- participation in school professional learning communities (PLCs); opportunities to assist teachers or other school professionals

Weeks 7/8- observations in schools and related agencies (Family Resource Centers/ Alternative Education/ Independent School); school district policies

Weeks 9/10- Classroom management

Weeks 11/12- lesson planning; engagement strategies

Weeks 13/14- differentiation; gifted and talented services; special education services

Weeks 15/16- school assessments; school reporting

 

Operational Interns:

Weeks 1/2- Building relationships with teammates; introduction to professional code of ethics and school law

Weeks 3/4- Overview of specific skills required for the department/position

Weeks 5/6- participation in related school/district meetings; opportunities to assist other school professionals; attendance in school board and school-based council meetings

Weeks 7/8- budgeting and management skills

Weeks 9/10- technology training and district policies

Weeks 11/12- Specific skill development; hands-on experiential learning

Weeks 13/14- Specific skill development; hands-on experiential learning

Weeks 15/16- culminating, skill-based learning project

 

Program Description:

 

The intern program for Breckinridge County Schools will last for one semester, either fall or spring. Typical work days would not exceed 8 hours. The applicant’s role will either be instructional or operational in nature, as a school district has a variety of roles for an effective school system. Training will consist of knowledge-based and experiential learning. All supervising staff members will be a master in their area, knowledgeable in the area of supervision, meet minimum requirements in the areas of experience and credentials, proficient in record keeping, and able to effectively communicate verbally and electronically.

 

Completion of the Skillbridge program with Breckinridge County Schools will provide the intern with an overview of the necessary skills to be effective in the chosen field and an opportunity for the intern to see if this field is a good fit. Future employment opportunities with the district would be more likely with successful completion of the program and if the intern successfully completes the required qualification for the chosen area. For example, an intern interested in becoming a teacher would be required to obtain the appropriate teacher certification.

 

Safety and Additional Requirements:

 

Interns will be expected to complete all required, online safety training provided by the school district.

 

In addition, interns will be required to submit a criminal record check and child abuse neglect check as specified by Kentucky state law.
