Job Description 

 

JOB TITLE: Instructional Assistant Substitute

SUPERVISOR: Principal

EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt 

WORK YEAR: Part time

 

BASIC FUNCTION: To assist, under the direction and supervision of certified personnel, in providing the best educational experience for all students.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 

  • Instructs individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher
  • Participates as a member of an instructional team; develops appropriate relationships with team members, parents, and students
  • Monitors and reports the behavior of students according to approved procedures
  • Performs routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; operates copy machines; maintains classroom records, 
  • Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies
  • Assists in overseeing students while in activities; provides for supplies as necessary
  • Assists students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude, and general guidance
  • Confers, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs
  • Assures the health and safety of students by following health practices and regulations
  • Directs group activities of students as assigned; assists in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assists in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips
  • Participates in meetings and training programs as assigned
  • Acts in accordance with the policies as set forth by the Breckinridge County Board of Education, KRS, KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations
  • Demonstrates loyalty, dedication, and a positive attitude toward the mission and goals of the Breckinridge County Schools
  • Is punctual and prepared for immediate assumption of duties upon arrival at school
  • Utilizes time appropriately 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrator

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

 

KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOLLOWING: 

  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Basic record-keeping techniques
  • Operation of a computer terminal and data entry techniques 
  • Oral and written communication skills 
  • Laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities

ABILITIES: 

  • Learn child guidance principles and practices
  • Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and the public, including members of diverse communities
  • Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities
  • Print and write legibly
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Monitor, observe and report students' behavior according to approved policies and procedures
  • Operate instructional and office equipment

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

The work is primarily sedentary. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. The work at times requires bending, squatting, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights. The work requires activities involving driving automotive equipment.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Experience and preparation required by the Board
  • Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate
  • Must have one of the following:  associate degree, 48 college hours, or pass the KY Paraeducator exam

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must demonstrate competent language skills
  • Must demonstrate ability to work with children in an organized setting
  • Must participate in program training as specified by the Kentucky Department of Education and local district
  • Must meet the requirements of a criminal records check as specified by Kentucky State Law
  • Must meet health requirements as specified in district personnel policy
